    I wonder - how many of you can remember the first time you had to fire someone?  I certainly do. Twenty years later, I can still feel the anxiety, doubt, and concern 😰 I felt as a newly minted manager about whether I was following best practices, putting myself or the company at risk, and most importantly whether I was showing empathy and compassion to the person impacted.  All of this despite the fact that I'm an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist who, at the time, had years of experience advising companies around the world on HR policy and practices.  But as a new manager I had never done THIS specific thing before.  I was essentially feeling around in the dark for what was the most important event of my professional life up until that point. I’m willing to make a $3 bet that many of you felt something similar during your first difficult management moment (comment below 👇 ).  We all know that transitioning to a managerial role comes with a very steep learning curve - leading people requires an entirely different and complex skill set that most folks promoted into the role do not possess. The sad news is the vast majority of the world's 200 million managers do not receive any level of formal training, mentorship, coaching or even a quick “how to“ pamphlet as they turn the corner into leadership. Last year Gartner / CEB, now Gartner concluded that a staggering 85% of managers get zero, zilch, nada from their company as they make this critical transition!!  And this does not fade over time; as you gain more experience, the problems you face as a leader just become more complex and the isolation becomes greater and greater.
