Still Serving - Veterans in Local Government #vetsinlocalgovt #icmaveterans #vlgmf
About us
The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Veterans are led by the ICMA Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC). The mission of the VAC is to enhance local government through the inclusion of Veterans who share the passion, skills, and knowledge to succeed in public service. This VAC uses these three pillars to raise awareness and promote veterans in local government: • Raising visibility on municipal government as a career among active duty and transitioning military personnel. • Building awareness of the skills and knowledge that veterans bring to the profession. • Develop and strengthen relationships between the veteran community and local government. ICMA Veterans achieve their mission through education, programming, outreach, and awareness. If you would like to help us with our mission - please consider making a contribution via the "Give" button at the top of the page. Please note Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC) in the "write us a comment" field to direct the contribution to our efforts. The marquee program offered is the Veterans Local Government Management Fellowship (VLGMF). The VLGMF is a 12 to 25-week Department of Defense approved Career Skills (SkillBridge) Program. The VLGMF provides transitioning service members with management training and hands-on experience in the local government environment with the goal of preparing them for smooth transitions into local government careers. A day that for those that served on Sept 11, will be forever immortalized. For many of us, it is incredibly significant as it either began our service journey or renewed it. #stillserving #countryandcommunity

Today, July 25th, 2025, is National Hire a Veteran Day — an important reminder to support our Veterans beyond their years of service. “Veterans serve an integral part in our communities globally". This is even more evident within the local government profession. This is a great time to not only remember the value, skills, dedication, and commitment they can bring to an organization, but also the level of service and discipline is unmatched. Thank you for your service and please remember that when you are looking for someone to play a role within your organization, remember to look at those who once wore a uniform. #LocalGovernment #Veterans #HireAVeteran #ICMAVeterans #ICMA

https://lnkd.in/g3DBYfFC Congrats on a great career of public service Tom Mick.
In late-June, I finished my tenure with the Village of Park Forest after more than 27 years. It capped a career of more than 30 years in local government and nearly 35 years of public service including time served in the military. The last 22 years as Village Manager were incredibly demanding of my time, patience and skills. In the months ahead, I will be focusing my time and efforts on my wife and family. They have stood beside me, and behind me, in the fishbowl environment that was my career. At the age of 55, I still have plenty of the proverbial gas in my tank. That being noted, I will be much more selective in where I focus my efforts. This will include maintaining many longstanding professional relationships that became friendships.
