Shay Mitchell, the actress and influencer behind BÉIS, just launched a line of sheet masks for kids. It's hitting a nerve with both marketers and parents. Mitchell isn't creating a trend: content from “Sephora Kids,” who show off their skincare routines on TikTok, hasn't slowed down. What might set this launch apart is how young the kids appear and how adult the branding feels. As Lydia Lee wrote, it “reads less like playtime and more like Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.” The brand is tapping hot markets: Gen Alpha and K-beauty (its Instagram bio simply reads “Consciously Crafted in Korea, Just for Kids!”) but it may have misread how parents would react. 75% of Gen Alpha parents hear their kids’ opinions on beauty, only 31% change what they buy (DKC). There is a big gap between what kids want and what parents will purchase, said Digital Culture Group, LLC's Crystal Foote. Kids’ face masks are not new, but their childlike branding usually makes them more palatable, said SW Projects LLC founder Sara Wilson, adding that strong reactions to marketing often lead to “selective outrage.” I spoke to Crystal and Sara Wilson about why this launch is causing so much debate, and what retailers should consider when building brands for younger generations. The Layover Lounge brought together Sun Mountain Sports, FlyHouse and Barsys for an evening of entertainment, connection and memories all wrapped up in the game of golf!
