This week, the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project, launched by our Center for the Circular Economy’s NextGen Consortium, was honored as a winner for The 5th Annual Anthem Awards (Community Voice Award + Sustainability, Environment & Climate), among other initiatives defining a new benchmark for impactful work. "This award shows that when brands, independent businesses and city governments work together, scalable solutions are born,” said Anh G., Project Innovation Director at Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy. The Petaluma Reusable Cup Project was the first city-wide reuse initiative int the U.S., and one of the most successful in the world. 220,000+ cups were collected in just three months — an unprecedented result that paves the way for more reusable systems. The #NextGen Consortium, managed by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, collaborated with WM,  Starbucks, The Recycling Partnership, How2Recycle®, municipalities and the National League of Cities to advance the recovery of polypropylene and paper cups. This week, WM added plastic cups made of polypropylene and paper to-go cups to its universal list of accepted recyclable materials. Closed Loop Ventures portfolio company Found Energy is looking to conduct the biggest real-world test of aluminum as a zero-carbon fuel. Based in Boston, Found Energy harnesses the energy in aluminum metal scraps to power industrial processes without fossil fuels. "Since 2022, the company has worked to develop ways to rapidly release energy from aluminum on a small scale. Now it’s just switched on a much larger version of its aluminum-powered engine, which will be installed to supply heat and hydrogen to a tool manufacturing facility in the southeastern U.S. next year."
