The Way Home for New Yorkers Experiencing Homelessness

About us

BRC is one of New York City's largest providers of housing and services for individuals experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1971 by a group of recovering alcoholics living in poverty in the Bowery’s infamous flophouses, these individuals had hope, and a firm belief that better days lay ahead. BRC serves nearly 13,000 individuals each year, operating more than 30 programs throughout the greater metropolitan area. The organization’s robust continuum of housing and services includes over 3,700 units of transitional and permanent housing; outreach and case management programs; and substance use and medical services. Together, these programs offer a caring and effective path from homelessness to home, providing comprehensive services that guide everyone on their unique journey.

Updates

  • We at BRC wanted to take a moment to share how thankful we are for you this year. Every supporter, every single donation, allows BRC to continue providing programs and services for vulnerable New Yorkers in need. Here are some of the milestones we have accomplished together this year: - Through our integrated, holistic care, BRC helped 6,848 individuals work through their addiction, manage mental illness, obtain employment, secure transitional housing, and move home. - The Robert C. Wood Apartments, opened doors in December 2024, is a 146-unit permanent, supported housing facility in Far Rockaway, Queens. The property also includes the Wanda Patterson Women's Residence next door, a 100-bed homeless shelter for women dealing with mental illness. - In September, we opened the Inwood Women's Residence, a 116-bed shelter for single adult women with a goal of placing clients into appropriate supportive housing within nine months. The property will also house a memorial and garden to acknowledge the fact that the site was once used as a burial ground for enslaved Africans and a Lenape Ceremonial Site. While the shelter portion of the project is operational, additional time and funding are needed to design and complete the memorial and garden, which is scheduled to open in 2028. None of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for your continued support of BRC and the New Yorkers we serve every day. #brc #boweryresidentscommittee #nyc #newyorkcity

  • Eddie was working full-time, but couldn't make enough money to pay his bills, take care of his family, and be able to afford rent in New York City, so he slept in the subway system. He was there so often that a train conductor recommended him to BRC. After spending several months in a BRC transitional employment shelter, Eddie learned how to save and budget his money. Fifteen years ago, Eddie was able to move into a BRC permanent supportive housing facility that serves disabled and formerly homeless single adults, couples, and families. Here, Eddie is part of a community - a community that is only possible because of supporters like you.   Your donation can fund hope this holiday season. The Lawrence Foundation is matching all donations up to $100,000 until 11:59 p.m. ET on December 2! • The Inwood Women’s Residence opened its doors on October 7th, 2025. The facility provides 116 beds of short-term housing and supportive services for women experiencing homelessness. The space will also house The Inwood Sacred Site, which is currently under construction. The Sacred Site will honor the land’s history as a burial ground for enslaved Africans and as a Lenape ceremonial site. If you missed the story of the site's unique history by Anna Kodé, featured in The New York Times, read it here: https://lnkd.in/eBGKDxaH

  • The Lawrence Foundation is generously matching all donations up to $100,000. For over five decades, BRC has been developing real solutions to address homelessness in New York City. From piloting the first Safe Haven shelter to our HomeStretch Housing model, BRC innovations are becoming standard operating procedure for homeless services providers in New York and beyond. In these challenging times, vulnerable New Yorkers need BRC’s comprehensive programs more than ever. But, we can’t do our work without your support. Don’t wait and donate to double your impact: https://lnkd.in/eeZZuRHM

  • Today, the spotlight is on Jamila Martinez, our Program Director (Transit Outreach), who shares, “If I can send one message to the public about the work that we do, I think what I would really want the public to know is that BRC is here. We are always here. We are a 24-hour operation. Whether rain, shine or snow, we are out here. We are dealing with years and years of stigma and biases about the shelter system, and we do have to communicate to the clients about how things have changed over the years, and make sure that they buy into the process, and sometimes that takes a little bit of time. So, if you tell us that somebody's there, we are contacting them, it is our goal to help anyone who needs our service. Everyone is deserving of a home, and we are here to try to provide that service.” Jamila works on the frontlines of homeless outreach and her relentless dedication to helping vulnerable New Yorkers in need continues to inspire us all. Thank you, Jamila, for everything you do to help those in need.

  • "Right now, we don't know, from one administration to the next, what policies or procedures they will implement, but we do know that there will be a housing crisis - and that there will be people who will be in need." - Alvin Thompson, Program Director, BRC Courtney Gross / NY1 News highlights how homelessness and mental health are key topics facing New Yorkers as they head into the voting booth. Alvin, along with BRC Program Director Kiahni Hughes discuss how BRC addresses these issues for our clients every day. https://lnkd.in/exdK9Cit (This video may appear to be behind a subscriber wall for some viewers. In the lead-up to the Marathon day, Lauren shares, “I’m running the NYC Marathon in support of BRC, an organization that gives thousands of New Yorkers the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. Being part of BRC’s Leadership Council and volunteering with BRC has been one of the most meaningful parts of my NYC experience — a reminder of the power of community and compassion in this city. I’m proud to run for BRC and to give back to the place that has given me so much.” Thank you, Lauren, for your continued support of BRC’s mission and helping change lives.
