  • Something new is happening at BNSF-served customer NEW Cooperative. The co-op, which operates rail-served facilities across Iowa, recently expanded its Osceola location by adding a dry fertilizer facility to its existing grain shuttle train-loading loop track.   The new addition includes a dry fertilizer dump pit, conveyor system, and a large fertilizer warehouse. Since October, the facility has been unloading potash, phosphate and sulfate fertilizers through the new system.   For now, NEW Cooperative is unloading single-car shipments of dry fertilizer, but as volumes grow, some of those movements could be converted to unit trains in the future.   Thank you, NEW Cooperative, for your continued trust in BNSF.

  • What does the term “shoofly” have to do with railroading? You’re about to find out!   A BNSF grain train was first to cross our new 404-foot rail bridge in late October just north of Fargo, North Dakota. The bridge was built over a 30-mile stormwater diversion channel that will alleviate flooding. This was the first of three bridges to be built as part of this project. The second bridge opened Wednesday, Nov. 12.   BNSF worked with the Red River Valley Alliance (RRVA), an organization formed to help prevent a repeat of catastrophic flooding of the area around Fargo and Moorhead, Minnesota.   “We appreciate working with RRVA and their efforts to ensure we continue serving our North Dakota customers while also partnering long-term to aid in flood protection for the community,” said BNSF Twin Cities Division Engineer Steve Lyne.    During bridge construction, a shoofly, which is railroad lingo for a temporary track, was built to route trains around the site. With the opening of the first bridge, the shoofly is no longer needed and will soon be taken out of service.

  • Congratulations to the 101 BNSF team members at our Brainerd, Minnesota, rail equipment repair facility who recently notched a significant safety milestone: more than two years without a reportable injury. And over the past decade, they’ve logged only two reportable injuries.   In those 10 years, the team has remanufactured 1,021 pieces of equipment and performed major repair on 77 units. Remanufacturing this equipment means they face a wide range of safety exposures, from welding and grinding to electrical systems, hydraulics and overhead cranes to forklifts.   “They look out for one another, participate in task-specific briefings and truly care about everyone going home each day the same way they showed up for work,” said Shop Manager Shawn Andrews of the team. He attributes their safety success to a simple but powerful principle: “Be your brother’s keeper.”
