Day 3 at the DNDA Summit 2025 was the perfect closing chapter: inspiring, reflective, and unlike any conference experience. One of the biggest highlights was the Unconference, where every participant became a co-designer. I had never been in a space where the content of a conference was truly created with the attendees. Open conversations, shared insights, and collective exploration made it feel alive and deeply human. We wrapped up with a powerful closing keynote from Don Norman, reminding us once again of the evolving and essential role of the designer. A role that asks us to speak the language of business, of community, and of sustainability and requires us to bridge worlds, translate needs, and design with intention. Feeling grateful, inspired, and full of ideas to take back home✨ Thank you Don Norman, Christine Trimble, Srini R. Srinivasan, and all the Don Norman Design Award DNDA team. Special thanks to 4.0 Solutions and Dautom for their sponsorship.

Most MES vendors don’t actually understand MES. Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud: MES is not the same for everyone. Every manufacturer runs differently. Every process is unique. Every data model is shaped by the business, not the software. The only universal part of MES is the Core Four: Work Orders Scheduling Downtime OEE Everything else needs to be customizable, scalable, and architected around the business — not hardcoded into rigid modules that force the plant to conform to the software. And yet… most MES platforms are built exactly that way. MES done wrong: One-size-fits-all modules Rigid data structures Hardcoded relationships Customizations that break upgrades Every plant rollout becomes a new “project” Scaling from 1 site → 3 sites becomes a rebuild MES done right: Schema-first, not screen-first 2D + 3D relationships modeled correctly Multi-tenant enterprise architecture Event-driven orchestration Build once → extend everywhere Data model matches the business (not the other way around) This is why platforms like Fuuz stand out in a crowded MES market. They treat MES as a platform, not a product. The Core Four come standardized — everything else adapts to the real operations, real data, and real complexity of your business. If you want to see what MES done right looks like, we just broke it down in our recent Problem Solvers session. 👉 Link to check out Fuuz is in the comments below. #MES #Manufacturing #DigitalTransformation #Industry40 #MESArchitecture #ERP #UnifiedOperations #Fuuz #WalkerReynolds #40Solutions

If you missed our Problem Solvers webinar with Fuuz, the link is in the comments — and it’s worth your time. Most MES platforms fail long before you ever get to enterprise scale. Not because the team can’t implement them… but because the architecture itself was never designed for enterprise problems. That was the theme that came up over and over again during our session with the Fuuz team — and why I wanted to share a few insights here. MES for ERP ≠ MES for Operations Most platforms on the market were built to solve one manufacturing line’s problems at a time. They work fine on a single line or single plant… …but the moment you try to scale across multiple lines, multiple facilities, or multiple ERPs? Everything breaks. True MES for ERP requires: 2D + 3D relationships in the data model A schema-first approach Graph-level context A clean, extensible OM Standardized + unique data structures across tenants Event-driven infrastructure Multi-site orchestration built in from day one This is the part most vendors get wrong. Fuuz got it right — because they lived the pain. Craig and Lance didn’t start as software founders. They started as integrators building real systems in real factories. And like every good integrator eventually discovers: “When you build the same custom solutions repeatedly, eventually you just build a platform.” That origin story matters. It’s why Fuuz feels like a platform built by power users for power users. During the webinar, we walked through their architecture — containerized, cloud-native, modular, schema-driven — and I’ll say this publicly: Fuuz is one of the very few OEMs where I had zero technical criticisms. That’s rare. Why MES fails at scale — and why Fuuz doesn’t When MES implementations collapse, it’s usually due to: Rigid relational models Siloed data Poor schema governance Customizations that destroy upgrade paths Lack of tenant strategy No event-driven backbone Architecture held together by point solutions Fuuz sidesteps all of that with: Auto-generated GraphQL APIs A unified OM Multi-tenant architecture Low-code + full-code extensibility 2D + 3D data modeling A first-class edge gateway Event-driven orchestration baked in This is what MES for ERP should look like. If you want to see the full walkthrough — and how we vet OEMs live — watch the webinar. Announcing NxGN (NextGen) as a Silver Sponsor for ProveIt! 2026!   We’re excited to welcome NxGN to ProveIt! 2026 as a first-time Silver Sponsor — and they’re bringing a platform that every manufacturer drowning in spreadsheets needs to see.   If “spreadsheet chaos” has become a way of life in your organization…   If your teams are stuck reconciling versions, emailing approvals, or merging data by hand…   If your systems don’t talk to each other…   NxGN built Capstone to end all of that.   Event Details 🗓️ February 16–20, 2026   📌 Hyatt Regency at Reunion Tower – Dallas, TX   Why NxGN? Because every manufacturer we talk to struggles with the same problem: The business runs on spreadsheets — but spreadsheets don’t scale.   Capstone is NxGN’s answer to that problem: an Integrated Data Intelligence Platform designed to deliver a real-time single source of truth without forcing teams to abandon the flexibility they depend on. Capstone brings order, structure, and intelligence to organizations where data is scattered, inconsistent, and manually maintained.   What NxGN Brings to ProveIt! 2026: Integrate Everything Replace disconnected spreadsheets with online, governed data capture — while still supporting Excel import/export. Connect source systems. Eliminate version conflicts. Stop chasing data.   Build Intelligence Define KPIs. Create targets. Configure validation workflows. Automate aggregation and consolidation across teams, plants, or departments. Let the platform do the heavy lifting.   Visualize & Analyze Everything in Real Time With Capstone, you get live dashboards, drill-down capability, and AI-powered insights that surface anomalies, patterns, and recommendations — without manual crunching.   Fully Configurable and Built for How You Work Every organization is different. • Every engineer has a graveyard. Not of machines… Not of systems… But of POCs that never made it out of the lab. You know the story: You spin up a quick Node-RED flow. It works. It solves the actual problem. The team loves it. And then—nothing. Because the moment you try to scale it, reality hits: * No centralized management * No version control * No secure deployment * Ten slightly different versions running in ten places * IT won’t support it * And nobody wants to be the one maintaining “that” flow in production Here’s the truth engineers rarely say out loud: The POC isn’t the problem. The architecture around it is. That’s why platforms like FlowFuse are changing the game. FlowFuse takes the flexibility engineers love in Node-RED… and adds the production-grade tooling needed to actually scale it: ✔ Remote + fleet deployment ✔ Centralized instance management ✔ Role-based access & audit logs ✔ Dev → Test → Prod flow promotion ✔ Edge + cloud orchestration at scale ✔ Governance IT trusts, freedom OT needs But here’s the real shift: FlowFuse now includes an AI Expert Assistant — a built-in agent that makes development 10x faster. You describe what you want in plain English… and the AI generates the logic: * SQL queries * JavaScript functions * Flow logic * Transformations * Data models No more waiting months for development. No more “I’ll get to it when I have time.” No more stalled digitization because the team is understaffed. And the future gets even more interesting: FlowFuse + LLM + MCP = text-driven operations. Ask the system: “What changed in the energy consumption on machine 4?” And it answers — or automates the workflow — on the spot. This is how you break out of POC purgatory. This is how Node-RED scales beyond one engineer’s desktop. And this is how OT builds solutions quickly while IT stays in their lane. Curious — how many POCs are sitting on a shelf in your org right now? Drop a number in the comments 👇 I’ll also put FlowFuse links in the comments. #FlowFuse #NodeRED #Automation #IIoT #DigitalTransformation #IndustrialAI #POC #Engineering #ITOT #ManufacturingTech #AIinManufacturing #WalkerReynolds #40Solutions
