Can electric vehicles become a source of electricity to the grid? China’s surging EV ownership – now exceeding 25.5m – is opening the door to a new technology that can help to enhance the flexibility of electricity supply. 💡 🔋 EVs connected via “vehicle-to-grid” (V2G) technology can function as “batteries on wheels” that charge and discharge according to the needs of the wider electricity system. The idea of turning EVs into “power banks” has already sparked both business and political interest in China. 🇨🇳 Read more about the new technology from Ye Yuan here ⬇️ https://buff.ly/7KhqesP #ElectricVehicles #Renewables #EnergyTransition #ChinaPolicy

The UK government 🇬🇧 has set out a long-awaited plan explaining how it will cut emissions in the 2030s, on its legally bound path to net-zero by the middle of the century. Under the Climate Change Act, the government must lay out “carbon budgets” that set limits on the UK’s emissions over five-year periods. The new plan is the third draft, after the previous two delivery plans were successfully challenged in court. ⚖️ In this explainer, Carbon Brief gives an overview of the 363 pages of documents included in the plan, what it says about meeting UK emissions targets and what it means for individual sectors. Governments have, once again, failed to agree on a timeline for the IPCC's seventh assessment cycle (AR7), two years into the process. The IPCC is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.🇺🇳 Last week, more than 300 scientists and government officials from around the world met in Lima, Peru🇵🇪 for the 63rd session of the IPCC (IPCC-63). According to the Earth Negotiations Bulletin, reporting exclusively from inside the four-day meeting, during the closed-door talks, “once-routine” issues became “deeply controversial and time-consuming”. For more on the "fraught deliberations", read Ayesha Tandon's reporting here ⬇️ https://buff.ly/rSMdzNf #IPCC #ClimateScience #ClimateChange #UNclimateTalks

China’s CO2 emissions have now been flat or falling for 18 months, according to new analysis for Carbon Brief. 🚗 The rapid adoption of electric vehicles saw CO2 emissions from transport fuel drop by 5% year-on-year, according to the analysis. 🏭 There were also emissions declines from cement and steel production. 📈 However, while emissions from the power sector were flat year-on-year, a big rise in the chemical industry’s CO2 output offset reductions elsewhere.
