At this year’s Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) Private Equity Forum in Hong Kong, Chairman of EQT Asia and Global Chairman nominee, Jean Eric Salata, sat down with Teia Merring, Senior Investment Director at USS Investment Management Limited, for a fireside chat on what’s next for private markets. The discussion explored the long-term opportunities in private markets, the importance of maintaining discipline and focus on value creation amid shifting market conditions, and the next phase of growth for EQT. As Asia’s private markets mature, what do you see as the key advantage for firms that can combine global scale with local depth?

Venture capital in Europe continues to scale, but there is still a gap with the U.S. In 2024, European startups attracted $5.9B in seed, $16.1B in early-stage, and $41B in later-stage funding. By comparison, U.S. companies raised $16.8B, $56.8B, and $141.7B across the same stages. The takeaway? Europe’s innovation ecosystem is maturing fast, but capital availability, particularly for later-stage growth, remains a critical unlock for scaling globally competitive technology champions. Where do you think Europe’s next surge of late-stage capital will come from?

"Europe’s innovation ecosystem is at an inflection point". As Partner Victor Englesson highlights in The AI Opportunity report, Europe already holds the key ingredients for long-term competitiveness: world-class research institutions, deep technical talent, and leadership in industries like healthcare, renewable energy, and software. The next challenge is scale, helping great companies grow into global champions. That’s why across the firm, we’ve invested €120bn ($140bn) in Europe over the past five years, with plans to double that to €250bn in the next five. The ambition is clear: to turn potential into performance and build the next generation of world-leading businesses. Read the full report: The AI Opportunity.https://spklv.io/6045K8MS

What will it take for Europe to lead the next wave of innovation? Read the full report here https://spklv.io/6043KML3

Europe has world-class researchers, engineers, and founders. But too many build their biggest successes elsewhere. As Partner Victor Englesson said at our recent AI Summit: “We need to move from exporting talent to importing talent.” It’s one of the central ideas in The AI Opportunity that Europe’s next era of growth depends on making it the best place in the world to build and scale an AI company.
