As global research becomes more interconnected and more strategically important, research security is rising rapidly on policy agendas. In 2025, OECD countries reported 250+ initiatives, up from just a few dozen in 2018. Research security is about identifying and managing risks such as foreign interference, misuse of sensitive research and threats to academic freedom, while keeping science open, collaborative and globally connected. Science and technology now sit at the core of national and economic security, and countries are moving from awareness-building to concrete governance, regulation and due diligence. The challenge is ensuring protection without slowing innovation or international cooperation. Proportionate, risk-based policies, clear guidance and tools for researchers and institutions, and continued monitoring, transparency and international dialogue are all key to safeguarding science. Rural economies are more dynamic than they appear and critical to national growth. While facing diverse challenges such as ageing and declining populations, slow internet and limited access to services, rural regions are finding ways to stay resilient. Across the OECD:  ➡️Nearly 50% of all manufacturing jobs are in rural areas.  ➡️ Rural economies are closing gaps in GDP per capita (economic output per person), converging toward national averages in 16 of 29 OECD countries. In 13 countries, rural regions outpaced metropolitan regions in GDP per capita growth between 2001–2021 ➡️Rural regions near small cities recorded the strongest economic growth among all rural types. The OECD report Reinforcing Rural Resilience shows how targeted rural policy and innovation can help rural communities to leverage local industries, boost tradeable sectors and help rural economies thrive. It was a pleasure to be back at the Grand Palais this week for the Adopt AI Summit. In my panel on Building AI Trust, I had the opportunity to highlight the continued efforts of the OECD - OCDE and GPAI to expand adoption and implementation of the OECD AI Principles—turning principles into practice through a forthcoming AI Policy Toolkit. It was also a chance to discuss the actions needed to promote AI adoption, in particular by small and medium-sized enterprises. Policy makers need to ensure widespread broadband connectivity, access to compute and data, as well as skill development. Thanks to my co-panelists and moderator Andrew Wilson, Clay Lin, Ken-Ichiro Natsume, and Dr. Derya Şahin, as well as to OECD colleagues Alice Holt, Emanuel Alijaj, and Takako Kitahara who joined me at the event: Adopt AI - Grand Palais.

How can Turkmenistan build a more competitive investment landscape? Launched at the 3rd EU-Central Asia Economic Forum as the first OECD - OCDE report dedicated to Turkmenistan, the report offers a fresh look at the country’s investment environment, highlighting opportunities and challenges for businesses and investors. #Turkmenistan has taken important steps towards WTO membership, improved state policies on import substitution and export promotion and it has contributed to a more dynamic private sector. Yet, regulatory barriers and an overreliance on hydrocarbon exports stand in the way of long-term and sustainable growth.   Access the report ➡️ short.do/PF8aaC #CentralAsia #GlobalGateway #InvestmentPolicy

Populations across the OECD will age fast over the next 25 years: by 2050 there will be 52 people aged 65+ for every 100 people aged 20-64. This is up from 33 people in 2025 and only 22 in 2000. This week's Policy Focus looks at how population ageing will influence pension policy and retirement, as well as what can be done to close the gender pension gap. Keep reading to find out more ⤵️

Retirement ages are set to rise in over half of OECD countries. For those starting their careers in 2024, the normal retirement age will increase on average to 66.4 years for men and 65.9 years for women, which is about two years more than workers retiring now. Current legislation on the normal retirement age shows a wide range: ➡️ 62 years in Luxembourg and Slovenia, as well as in Colombia for men. ➡️ 70 years or more in Denmark, Estonia, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. Spain’s economy continues to show resilience, driven by strong investment, services exports and robust job creation. To sustain this momentum, the new OECD Economic Survey of Spain recommends containing pension costs, prioritising productive investment and boosting productivity by enabling small firms to grow and by better harnessing the contributions of older workers and migrants. Spain can also accelerate its green transition through targeted investments in energy and transport decarbonisation while increasing adaptation efforts. Today, OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann and Carlos Cuerpo Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, launched the new #OECD Economic Survey of Spain. Read more: https://brnw.ch/21wXQH3
