All in on venture investing? When other athletes ask me this, my answer is: Definitely not! 🙅♂️ But that’s the short answer. I enjoy investing in startups and think it’s a great opportunity, but it’s a step that only comes after several others. A soccer career is short compared to other jobs, so building long-term security within those years is essential. Venture investing means high risk and possibly high reward. But speaking of long-term security, I would always recommend starting with stocks and real estate and then add private equity and venture capital. Beyond that, venture investing is a really exciting opportunity, especially for athletes, as both fields share some surprising similarities. Probably the biggest one is: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I have invested in startups that have multiplied their value and in others that have already gone bankrupt. Of course, you want to maximize your chances of succeeding, which is best possible with a good team around you and a network of experts, founders, and fund managers who grant access to promising projects. Building this network was probably the hardest part of my journey so far, and I’m really happy where we are now with Companion-M. This is also why I am happy to talk to and help other athletes; I know how hard it is to enter this business. But more and more athletes in Europe are joining and following the example of US athletes like Serena Williams, Stephen Curry or Kevin Durant who have been successful business people for several years already.
