Recently, we celebrated the official opening of the Wynyard Elementary School playground, a project The Sofina Foundation and Wynyard Dream Builders have been working toward for months. When we first announced this project earlier this year, the excitement from the community was incredible. Seeing those same children now running, playing, and creating memories on their new playground brought the excitement full circle. The celebration took place at the elementary school bringing together students, families, and the Sofina team that made it all possible. Many of the parents who work at our Wynyard plant and hatchery were there to see their children enjoy this new space, making the moment even more meaningful. This playground came to life thanks to the dedication of our Wynyard Dream Builders, who raised over $50,000 through fundraising events, with every dollar matched by Sofina Foods and supported by The Sofina Foundation. We're honoured to announce that Sofina has been recognized with the 2025 Kaizen Award for Lean Project & Construction Management at the Kaizen Awards North America. This award celebrates our new Calgary facility, which increased production capacity by over 150% and now stands as one of the largest poultry processing plants nationwide. The project navigated significant challenges including COVID-19 disruptions, wildfires, and port strikes, yet was delivered on time and on budget through disciplined project management that balanced flexibility and control. By embracing lean principles and fostering true collaboration across our entire project team, we streamlined processes, eliminated waste, and created real value for our stakeholders through proactive risk management, rigorous cost control, schedule discipline, structured change management, and comprehensive quality tracking. The results include improved efficiency, increased throughput, and robust project governance now being used as a model across our organization. As Sharon Vanstone, P.Eng, Director, Engineering, noted in her acceptance speech: "The lessons we learned here will not only benefit this facility, but serve as a learning model for future projects in our industry." Our Safety and Quality teams recently concluded their annual conference in Markham, celebrating the theme "Better Together". During the team’s time together, they covered several topics and presentations to help drive our Safety culture and performance forward, including: - Foreign material management - Sanitation protocols - Allergen changeovers - Compliance standards - Critical Health and Safety training and protocols - Ergonomics The sessions brought innovation and engagement with hands-on training, interactive safety charades, kahoot competitions, and group wellness activities. The conference concluded with well-deserved recognition for a number of our Sofina Builders: Sharon Bartoshewski (Quality Assurance Manager of the Year and Leads in All 5 Dimensions Awards ), Vesta Mostafavi (Future Leader Builder Award), Bhumin Patel (Ambassador recognition), and Kevin Courneyea (Safety Leader of the Year).
