Transgender Day of Remembrance began in 1999 when Gwendolyn Ann Smith created a vigil for Rita Hester, a transgender woman whose death drew attention to the violence faced by transgender communities. The day has since grown into a global moment of remembrance. Across Canada, people mark this day by honouring the lives lost to anti transgender violence and by reinforcing the need for safer and more inclusive spaces. As a national retailer, our teams meet many communities every day. This day is a reminder that dignity and respect shape how people experience our stores and our workplaces.
